The Vermillion Area Arts Council is pleased to share that its recently-held, unique event welcomed 60+ attendees to the Washington Street Arts Center, as well as to town. While celebrating the creative Arts genre of Steampunk, the VAAC welcomed a variety of performing acts, vendors, and costumed visitors for an afternoon of revelry on September 14th.

The event began with hands-on activities for the whole family, demos and a variety of vendors including the Siouxland Renaissance Festival and Professor Packard’s Tintype Emporium, an enterprise of photographer Aaron Packard - specializing in the historic tintype photography technique. The second half of the day was filled with performances by Jewel in the Lotus bellydance troupe, Jim Perry Magic, Magnificent Booty (historically inaccurate pirate comedy), as well as youth and adult costume contests. Afterward, participants were encouraged to venture downtown to attend a free Screening of The Princess Bride at the Vermillion Theater, which enjoyed a full house.

Costumed participation was encouraged through the awarding of prizes for each of the costume contests. Visitors arrived in a dizzying array of steampunk and pirate-inspired gear, putting their handiwork on display during the youth costume contest (for those 17 & under) and during the adult costume contest at the very end of the evening. Anika Holdhusen and Jonathan Krueger won these contests, respectively, and each received a complimentary membership to the Arts Council.

The Festival was graciously sponsored by Carey’s Bar, Vermillion Ford, and Lori Whitman. All proceeds will benefit on-going VAAC programming.

The Vermillion Area Arts Council was founded in 1974 to advocate and support the arts in the Vermillion Community. Through Fine Arts classes, workshops, exhibits, concerts and performances, local arts advocacy and support, the council aims to expand the foundation of the Fine Arts, education, and community.
